Kestrelkit's Story
<----- Aspenstream and Kestrelkit
Wind howled outside the nursery. Aspenstream's dark tabby fur was hardly visible as she curled up in the nursery, kits mewling at her belly. She wrapped her tail around them tighter. Her mate, Cedarfall, purred quietly as she rubbed her muzzle with his. Suddenly the entrance shievered and a white she-cat trotted into the dark space, fish clamped in her jaws, fur smelling of wet grass and rain. The white cat dropped the fish at the queen's paws, touching noses in greeting.
"Hi." Aspenstream meowed. "Thanks for the fish, Lightfur." The white warrior flicked her tail in acknowledgement, crouching down, gaze fixed on the squirming kittens. Aspenstream cast a longing glance at the nursery entrance, then sighed and began to eat the fish. Lightfur saw this glance, but decided to wait until the tabby had eaten the fish before she spoke.
"I can stay with them for a bit," Lightfur offered, "while you go outside. Just don't catch a cold. It's wet and chilly out there!" She fluffed out her fur for emphasis, and shivered as another cold draft swept into the nursery. She crossed the den and tucked more ferns and brambles into the entrance, blocking most of the wind. Aspenstream nodded gratefully and stood up, squeezing through the small edit. Cedarfall followed.
Lightfur curled around the kits, lapping at their downy fur. She closed her eyes, chin on paws. The rhythmic patter of the rain on the roof lured her to sleep and the gently squeaking of the kittens. They, too, settled down as Lightfur tumbled into sleep.
Meanwhile:
Aspenstream stood on the rocks at the top of the waterfall, claws unsheathed and frayed, eyes amber pools of terror. She trembled as the water surged around her paws, snagging and ripping at her fur, trying to drag her in. She had been climbing to get some excersise but had gone too far. "Cedarfall, help!" She yowled, almost losing her balance as a wave soaked her belly fur.
Cedarfall bounded up the rocks, fur plastered to his body as the rain drenched his pelt. He reached her, slipped... And flailed into the rolling water. His jaws stretched in a helpless scream as he was thrown down the waterfall. Aspenstream followed, trying to save him. Together they smack into the river below hard and began to kick out at the churning river. Cedarfall bobbed for a few moments. Then a rock stabbed him in the side, staining the water pink with his blood, and the water closed over his head. Aspenstream swam over and dove under, searching for his fur. She went deep, determined to find her mate.
But he was gone.
And she never left the raging waters herself. She had her own grave of gravel and stones, water and reeds.
Only one kit, the biggest, mana jest to survive without her proper mother. Lightfur cared for her. She was named Kestrelkit, after the bird that could have easily rode the winds that howled that night.
I recently made a character named Kestrelkit, and she had no parents, and Silvie agreed to Lightfur acting like a mother to her. So I decided to make a story! ๐ฑ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐๐๐
